Palm Island

A private launch brings guests from neighbouring Union Island to this rather special dot in the ocean, at which point the easy tempo is almost tangible. Entertainment is low key and largely provided by Nature, from silent snorkelling over offshore reefs, to following the island’s walking trails, where tropical birds and indigenous iguana thrive undisturbed, or simply snoozing in a hammock and enjoying the sound of the sea. So far, so ‘castaway’, but to this unspoilt  Eden, the hotel adds fine facilities, a range of stylish air-conditioned cottages, and a sense of luxury, all unobtrusively clustered beneath the soaring coconut palms.
A glorious lagoon-style pool is splashed by a waterfall cascade. Two restaurants make convivial venues, with freshly caught seafood and locally grown ingredients on the menu of Euro-Caribbean cuisine. Tennis and sailing are available here, boat trips leave for the Tobago Cays, and the complimentary crossing to Union Island adds scuba diving, shopping, sightseeing and yacht-spotting to punctuate perfect idling.
